First announced at the SHOT show in 2019, the JSB Hades is in .22 and .25 calibers. The caliber sequence rolling out is designed to appeal primarily to hunters, for whom the pellet is intended. A small .17 caliber version was also announced at this year’s SHOT forum, due for a summer release in the US. With a name like this, the Hades is very much geared towards the hunter. After all, Hades is the Greek god of the underworld and these pellets are intended to shepherd our quarry animals to the afterlife, albeit a little earlier than they might have liked. This pellet is made by the well-known JSB brand, perfectly manufactured to give the best shooting experience. The Hades features a specially designed hollow-point top that maximises expansion. Hades are available in tins of 500 pellets in .177, and my whole tin’s worth was free of lead detritus. I’m a firm believer that the quality of airgun ammunition is getting better and better, with clean, consistent ammo that’s ready to shoot straight out of the tin being the norm, and the Hades didn’t disappoint. I ended up using my Weihrauch HW100 BP for this test, shooting the pellets at reduced distances of 15, 20 and 25 yards as these pellets just weren’t cutting it at anything further than that with my particular rifles. Note that accuracy is a product of the complete “system” of airgun, scope, atmospheric conditions and shooter ability – not the pellet alone.In standardized HAM testing, we recorded a BC of 0.018. These pellets have performed exceptionally across the variety of air rifles that I have fired them from. As mentioned, these pellets are well made and 100% consistent in terms of their weight, but the head size of my pellets was quite small and they did feel a bit loose in all three barrels. The domed head has three very deep indentations molded into it. In a way, it’s a type of hollow point design. However you describe the design, Hades pellets mushroom on impact in a devastating fashion! That’s why it’s so good for hunting. As for caliber, the pellets are for .22 cal, that’s 5.50 mm in diameter. The average diameter of the pellets tested by HAM was 5.50 mm and that was also the most common head diameter among the pellets measured.

As an airgun hunter, the JSB Hades pellet is replacing all others as my primary hunting round. Their relatively light weight makes them particularly suitable for use in lower-powered breakbarrel airguns. However they will likely shoot well in many air rifles, including more powerful PCP models. I was able to stabilize the JSB Hades pellets at a 927 fps muzzle velocity at the second regulator setting. This gave me 30.3 foot per pound of power, which I found to be an incredible value. I had seen how effective the JSB Hades was at delivering more dump energy and better expansion into a target. This improved the chances for a clean kill, more forgiving while being safer in case of an exit.Another test included a Lelya air gun, set to deliver 900 fps for the Hades 16 grain pellets. The high-velocity muzzle energy gave me 12 groups at 45 yards for 5/8 of an inch.
