In my opinion this book is an enjoyable read and a great introduction (for anyone) looking to broaden their knowledge into transgender issues. She was the first in her family to go on to higher education, landing a place at Bangor university in north Wales, where she studied psychology, dabbled in acting and music reviewing, and decided that fame might be the answer. Part of the groundbreaking and important ' And Other Big Questions' series, which offers balanced and considered views on the big issues we face in the world we live in today.Perhaps even more so right now, as a certain formerly beloved British author has been throwing her ignorant, uniformed views into the public conversation and making waves. It's quite funny and self-effacing but remember it is only one human's experience and doesn't reflect the story of everyone. She now contributes regularly to magazines, newspapers and broadcast news including the Guardian, Attitude Magazine, BBC Woman’s Hour and Front Row. She does two things here: Telling the story of her life as it relates to Gender (which she personifies throughout the book), and using the opportunities presented by her story to explicate the ideas of Gender, sexuality, and other feminist and social issues, in plain language in a way that most people would be easily able to understand.

In her memoir, Dawson refers to Elsa, the female protagonist of Disney’s mega-hit film Frozen (2013), as ‘very trans’, locating in this character an essence of trans-ness which suggests that ‘children’s’ popular culture – even products as mainstream as Disney films – might be available to queer readings, speaking to and for young LGBTQ+ audiences without spelling out direct similarities. in public places and that instead it would be beneficial to use gender neutral language in these instances. Then again, I'm sensitive to this because a friend of mine is always the one to take a joke too far.It is more a very confused, but very opinionated person trying to tell you that gender stereotypes are invented by society, and a very unhealthy thing which should be ignored, then then contradicting themselves totally by saying they prefer things which are associated with the female gender, but have to become a transwoman to be feminine, which totally contradicts everything they say about not being dictated to by gender stereotypes. I don't agree with her views on women's magazines offering good things as I think they are still far too focused on celeb culture, stereotypes, diets, image etc. While I’m delighted with my perky little boobs,” she says, “I was profoundly disappointed that my urge to cut myself didn’t vanish with the first milligram of oestrogen to pass my lips. In the end, I think this is certainly a book worth reading and a story worth uncovering and I really do hope that more of these books start to be produced mainstream so that others who are trans or have gender-dysmorphia can find them.
