About this deal

Throughout the book, Carrie discusses and highlights the non-linear process of transition and how what we feel and allow ourselves to feel is shaped by our environment and the information we have. As a recently-out-as-enby person there's a lot to which I was furiously nodding along, but this book has such broad appeal beyond queer audiences. At the Paisley Book festival Carrie says she’s seen so many Trans books that are tragic stories about Transphobia and how tragic their stories are and she wanted to show how although her story has had a tough elements like they all do she wanted to show a middle class side of it and how the NHS process works and not all stories are that way or the same. i loved the nods to glasgow throughout and it educated me further on trans issues in scotland/the uk.

You can push a culture war, ban books and try to bring back Section 28, but that knowledge and understanding and empathy is out there now. I’m sad that someone I have known for almost 20 years went through so much while hiding her true self, but happy that she’s now in a place of strength and empowerment. For my kids and their peers, whether you’re gay or trans or non-binary is probably the least interesting thing about you. Carrie Kills a Man is a funny, insightful and highly relatable account of navigating the choppy waters of starting again when you thought you knew who you were.Carrie Kills A Man* is about growing up in a world that doesn't want you, and about how it feels to throw a hand grenade into a perfect life.

I really hope readers see themselves reflected a little bit, whether that’s in the funnier stuff – I think we sometimes need outsiders’ eyes to remind us of just how weird and funny a lot of the things we take for granted are – or in the bigger picture: you don’t need to be trans to wonder what it’d be like if you decided to reboot your whole life and take a different path. I think this recognition is really powerful as it really highlights that how we feel can evolve as our environment changes and as our knowledge about something increases. And the portrait being painted of us is a monstrous one; it’s like people are competing with one another to see who can make up the nastiest stuff about us. Carrie Kills A Man * is about growing up in a world that doesn’t want you, and about how it feels to throw a hand grenade into a perfect life. So far it’s been nominated for Discover Book of the Year in the 2023 British Book Awards, chosen as Book of the Week by Damian Barr’s Literary Salon, picked as one of The Scotsman’s Books of the Year in 2022 and had various nice things said about it in print and online. You can also drag and drop the file onto your Kindle if you attach the device to your PC with a USB cable.
