About this deal

There are 8 different shapes and sizes in the Fiskars X-Series Axes range, which includes 3 x chopping axes and 5 x splitting axes, as seen in the image above. Each of the different Fiskars axes will do one job better than the next, which is why you should have a good idea of what you will be using it for before you buy one. The past few months, during the wood chopping courses, we put the Norden to the test. We, but also the participants, used and abused the axe. When felling trees and splitting and carving wood. We also sharpened the axe. The design of the axehead allows for efficient penetration into wood, enhancing its cutting performance.

Despite the short handle, the wedge-shaped head makes it almost as good at chopping or splitting as the X7. Although you do lose a bit of power, and the leverage a longer handle can provide when splitting. Sometimes it helps to twist wood apart if it doesn’t split on the first strike, and you can’t do that as easily with the X5. I would get the X7. I was originally skeptical but the over-mold does make a difference, and the price is almost identical. Gerber Freescape 14

This axe can flex between one-handed use for kindling and two-handed use splitting larger logs. It can go up to about 8″ wide logs. The Fiskars Norden axes were one of the most impressive releases of 2019. But are these axes really that good? Bushcraft expert Siegurd van Leusen found out and wrote this expert review. For this review he used the Fiskars Norden N10 felling axe. First impressions The X11 has a heavier specialized head with flared cheeks that help fling the wood apart when splitting. The 17″ handle allows it to be used one-handed or two, so you can put some real power behind it for larger pieces of wood.

Because of the heavy head, and long handle it’s actually a little clumsy to use one-handed for the smallest pieces of kindling or tinder. I hold it mid-handle for these small jobs, or more often switch to something like a knife for the tinder. The Fiskars X21 axe is ideal for splitting logs of up to 30 cm and above and is a great all-rounder that can handle most heavy-duty chopping tasks. The head is the same width as the X17 above, which means this axe can be used for more detailed woodwork and smaller chopping tasks. The head is a 1lb stout wedge shape that makes it decent at both splitting and chopping greenwood up to about 4-5″ wide. We could only conclude that this axe is a perfect replacement for the Fiskars X7 and X10. The whole feels better in hand because of the slight curve. The axe is heavier, but in this case this isn't a disadvantage. You have a little more body as you use the axe. So if size and weight are the most important factors – then this is a capable little hatchet. But I would go for the X7 if possible.Fiskars axes also come quite sharp for an inexpensive axe. There is a uniform 30-degree edge that will cut in for smaller tinder, even if the head shape isn’t suited for slicing. The X7 handle length is perfect for splitting kindling The Fiskars X10 chopping axe is well-suited for various tasks such as felling small trees, cutting kindling, carving, and limbing smaller branches. While you would be forgiven for calling a hatchet an axe, there are some loose differences between axes and hatchets which are still up for debate. Senior editor at Popular Mechanics, Roy Berendsohn defines a hatchet as simply, “a small one-hand axe used for chopping”, which I would have to agree with.

This is a two-handed axe, and you can generate much power to start splitting larger logs, even up to 12 inches in diameter. While the splitting axes could be used to chop in a pinch, they won’t be able to cut very deep into the side of a log/tree because of the head shape. The Fiskars Norden N10 reminds me of the Fiskars X10. The carbon steel axe head is almost identical. I noticed that the handle of the Norden N10 is not as straight as the old X10. The Norden N10 contains a slight curve which is a real plus for me. Fiskars Norden N10 in use While they are interesting, these axes have never really spoken to me as they have the same head design, material, and performance as the X-series axes, but can cost 3 times more. The X7 has a well-earned reputation as an incredibly high-value tool. It is the “standard” hatchet length, with a versatile head design that makes it great for fireplace kindling, camping, basic bushcraft, and work around the property. Fiskars X7 performanceI find the X11 too small for anything other than splitting logs of around 8 inches in diameter that you can split one-handed. I prefer a larger splitting axe and a separate hatchet rather than an intermediate-sized axe like the X11. In this Fiskars X-Series Axes Comparison Guide, we explain what each different model is designed for and what it is best used for. You will learn the difference between a hatchet and a camping axe as well as come out knowing which axe you need. Fiskars X-Series Axes Comparison
