About this deal

Find your comrades. The Spartan lawgiver Lycurgus introduced the common mess hall and required that all citizens eat together. It was harder to eat more than your fair share, more than your healthy share, when you were surrounded by your comrades in battle. It’s true that it takes courage to cultivate self-discipline. But embracing this lifestyle will likely make you more successful. And, more importantly, it’ll make you great – no matter what happens. View everything in the calm and mild light. George Washington had a mantra that always calmed him down when things seemed to be at their absolute worst. In a single two week period in 1797, Washington included it in three different letters. And later, in Washington’s greatest but probably least known moment, when he talked down the mutinous troops who were plotting to overthrow the U.S government at Newburgh, he said it, as he urged them away from acting on their anger and frustration. View everything, he liked to say, “in the calm light of mild philosophy.” In the next sections, we’ll explore exactly how to manifest self-discipline physically, mentally, and spiritually. First up? The body. Take control of your body before it takes control of you.

Discipline is Destiny is right alongside The Obstacle is the Way as not only my favorite Ryan Holiday books, but as some of my favorite books of all time. You might be thinking, Hell, no. Not for me. Self-discipline? More like self-deprivation! Maybe you celebrate or even envy people who take the easy path. You might think they’re having more fun or getting ahead faster. But look more closely, and you’ll realize that all that glitters isn’t gold. Take greed, for instance. It means you’re always on the prowl for more – and so never really enjoy everything you currently have. And not realizing your full potential? That’s a state which breeds pain, misery, and self-loathing. Be hard on yourself. “Take the cold bath bravely, ‘’ W.E.B Dubois wrote to his daughter. “ Make yourself do unpleasant things so as to gain the upper hand of your soul.” By being hard on ourselves, it makes it harder for others to be hard on us. By being our own tyrant, we take away the power of tyrants over us. Discipline Is Destiny discusses practicing discipline in the modern world. Using self-restraint to achieve your goals. Also, making small steps — putting one foot in front of the other — and making lots of progress. Speak little. Robert Greene puts it perfectly: “Powerful people impress and intimidate by saying less.” They have the discipline and this discipline creates a powerful presence.

He talks a lot about how to be ‘great’ and the ambition to be ‘great’, and given that this book series is supposed to be about the Stoic virtues, this is not at all Stoic. Being ‘great’ is not something you have control over, nor is it something that actually creates a good life. Do normal people care about being ‘great’? No. We just want a good life. Most of us aren’t writers, athletes or politicians - we have bosses, normal jobs, people above us and do not have the luxury of deciding when to work or how to work. Ryan seems very out of touch with what a normal person is, he is too focused on his Silicon Valley type Stoicism to actually see what real Stoicism is. journey

To master anything, one must first master themselves–one’s emotions, one’s thoughts, one’s actions. Eisenhower famously said that freedom is really the opportunity to practice self-discipline. Cicero called the virtue of temperance the polish of life. Without boundaries and restraint, we risk not only failing to meet our full potential and jeopardizing what we have achieved, but we ensure misery and shame. In a world of temptation and excess, this ancient idea is more urgent than ever. It’s not a palace or a throne that makes someone impressive, the Stoics would say, but kingly behavior that does. It’s discipline, self-control. He wasn’t after power or status, he said, but, “perfection of character: to live your last day, every day, without frenzy or sloth or pretense.” He was after becoming the best version of himself possible, putting a fine polish on top of everything he did, no matter how humble or impressive.

But thankfully, Discipline Is Destiny by Ryan Holiday is completely different. In fact, it’s the best book about productivity I’ve ever read. What’s The Book About? There’s a brief moment between each stimulus and your response. You can either use it to think, gather yourself, and wait for more information – or you can succumb to destructive patterns like getting offended, jumping to conclusions, and assigning blame. Bad situations won’t get better through bad reactions toward them; they’ll just get worse. So hone that tiny moment of patience before you respond. Ask yourself if what you’re experiencing is actually true, whether it’s as annoying or upsetting as it feels. Don’t let fear, anger, or prejudice override your mind. PDF / EPUB File Name: Discipline_Is_Destiny_-_Ryan_Holiday.pdf, Discipline_Is_Destiny_-_Ryan_Holiday.epub He talks of ‘managing the load’ (ie to rest so that you can work when it counts) after giving a chapter talking about Gehring who didn’t rest and worked with broken bones and seemed to praise this absolutely insane desire for winning and disregard for the long term effects….just one contradiction in a book of many.
