Today, I’m diving into the Aultmore 18 yo whisky, and what immediately captures my attention is the enchanting name of their single malt collection: Foggy Moss. Just mentioning it conjures a vivid image – a hauntingly beautiful scene of fog weaving through the corridors of a moss-draped, long-forgotten castle nestled on the misty moors.

Provided with a briefing from two current whisky award judges (who gave us the guidelines for the most recent whisky awards that they both judged) off we set. I have a few observations from this evening, that I’m still trying to work though in my head, and with some of them, frankly I’m struggling. Firstly: Scores below 60 are deemed faulty (seems completely fair enough to me), but just 10 points higher at 70 and you’re straight into the Silver Medal category. Wow. There’s very little difference relatively between a whisky deemed incorrect from a production standpoint and another whisky which would be given a prize for being indicative and representative of quality. Surely there should be more nuance than just 10 points between failure and accolade? Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 20th Anniversary Edition Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 2019 Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). the nose is nice (and easily the best part of this whisky) with a decent amount of complexity and variety.

PALATE: The first sip is akin to biting into a succulent, fresh peach dusted with vanilla sugar, accompanied by playful notes of lemon drops and a touch of greenery. As the journey continues, subtle sherry undertones merge seamlessly with the warm embrace of freshly baked biscuits and a gentle hint of oak. A subtle nutty maltiness and a dash of pepper on the palate. Adding a few drops of water softens the slight alcohol heat. It brings forth the green notes, creating a complex and utterly delightful experience.

FINISH: The finish lingers for a medium duration, leaving notes of malt, oak, and a gentle kiss of lemon pepper. Long finish, a touch of ash and brine, bold and full of flavor. Pepper, caramel, fresh biscuits and sweet buttercream. Very long finish, delightful. The Service has been prepared by us solely for information purposes to Members and the Service is based on information we consider reliable and we obtain the contents of the Service from a number of different third party sources (including Contributions), but we do not endorse, support, represent, warrant or guarantee the completeness, truthfulness, accuracy, or reliability of the Services and any information therein. In the mouth: lovely density to this, and a curious meaty note – a hint of umami, olives and sundried tomatoes, but just a flash before it becomes sweeter. Golden syrup, vanilla, baked pears. Touch of cinnamon. Blood oranges, a zing of pink grapefruit. Roasted herbs. Aubergine (or eggplant, if you’re a step below on the evolutionary ladder). Toasted almonds. It feels nicely autumnal. These are all familiar flavours, yet there’s a harmony here, not to mention a great heft to the spirit. Sparks of lime juice on an oily finish. Conclusions

texture and mouthfeel are just way too thin, even rolling it around your glass it acts more like water than a luxurious whisky. Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. It works only in coordination with the primary cookie. This is a surprise in many ways. One of the first, newly imported 700ml imports to cross my desk, I'm already happy to see previous EU only bottlings here in the US. Rich, decadent, a lovely combination of malt, sweetness, savory smoke and a touch of salinity make this an easy bottle to pour another dram from. Colour… I can pretend I’m a whisky snob, I can bang on about knowing the ins and outs of the industry, but here I am, skimming along until something catches my eye. (Sherry bomb enthusiasts, take note here, I was looking for a non-sherry cask whisky. I have plenty of those.) It is shallow. Maybe it’s a bit like going on gut instinct, rather than being seduced by any of the marketing copy on the bottle (I jest, of course, most whisky copywriting is hilarious, I rarely trust it). Indeed, perhaps I’m just so jaded that I cannot trust anything now: in the absence of good information on how the distillate was made, or really what the casks were, can you blame me for looking at the colour?

As it turns out, my imagination is pretty close to the mark. Aultmore Distillery is nestled in the heart of the Scottish Speyside region, specifically in Banffshire. This location often finds itself veiled in a dense, mysterious fog, which only adds to the allure of this remarkable distillery.
