Where prayer is exercised God breaks in with His supernatural acts, His ‘signs and wonders’ (verse 30). These Christians prayed that God would stretch out His hand to heal and that He would perform miracles. But some Christians today think the days of miracles are past! Are they? Some say that the Apostolic signs are no longer required and since the canon of Scripture is closed we must not expect to see miracles performed. You may think there is truth in all this, but often when we say these things we are justifying and excusing our prayerlessness. The fact is that when the Church prays miracles really do take place. Miracles are wrought in the spiritual realm; souls are saved, and even desperate people are converted. In the physical realm also God is pleased to heal the bodies and minds of His children. Philippians 4:6-7 highlights the power of prayer in guarding both ours and our children’s hearts and minds ‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’ Interpretation Question: Is there a contradiction between God’s desire for all to be saved and the doctrine of election? Such prayer for all is good and welcomed before God our Savior, since he wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one intermediary between God and humanity, Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself as a ransom for all, revealing God’s purpose at his appointed time. For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle—I am telling the truth; I am not lying—and a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank you that all good gifts come from you. I thank you that I can trust you for the future of my family. Please guide my child in every step they take. I pray they would know your provision and protection. Make steady their steps I pray. Amen

As mentioned, others see a theological conflict with this verse when considering the doctrine of election—that God chose some for salvation before the creation of the earth (cf. Eph 1:4-6, Rom 8:29-30). If God “desires” everybody to be saved, then why didn’t he elect everybody for salvation? Prayers is a general word for all communication with God. Unlike supplications, it is only used of God in the Bible. Therefore, it probably includes a “unique element of worship and reverence.” 2 In our worship, we must constantly take time to praise God for who he is and honor his characteristics. The Lord’s Prayer begins with “Hallowed be thy name.” John 5:14 says, “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us” (New King James Version). Evidently, God can’t answer prayer points that are unbiblical or against His will. The church must pray in line with the Word of God, His will. We should not pray prayer points that only excite people but don’t attract answers from heaven. James 4:3 says, “When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures” (New International Version). The church didn’t hold a meeting to discuss Peter’s condition and deliberate how to send a delegation to Herod to beg for Peter’s release! The church prayed earnestly for God to release him, and He did. The weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God to destroy the devil’s stronghold (2 Corinthians 10:4).The video above uses some of the beautiful words used during the consecration and homily in St Peter’s Basilica, to help us join in prayer, accompanied by images and music. First of all, then, I urge that requests, prayers, intercessions, and thanks be offered on behalf of all people,

They were devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. I looked for a man from among them who would repair the wall and stand in the gap before me on behalf of the land, so that I would not destroy it, but I found no one. So I have poured my anger on them, and destroyed them with the fire of my fury. I hereby repay them for what they have done, declares the sovereign Lord.” Merciful God, thank you that your work is perfect, your ways are just, you are a God of faithfulness. Your word says that you are near to all who call on you, to all who call on you in truth. We call on you to strengthen your church. Use your people to bring your blessing to the communities in which they live. May you, the God of all grace, who has called us into eternal glory by Christ Jesus, make the church holy, strong and filled with peace. To you be glory and honor, forever and ever. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen. Thank you Jesus that you have lived here as one of us, you know what it’s like to be a child, and to feel everything that children feel. Thank you that we as adults have everything we need to encourage, nurture and provide for those in need. When the Litany is said instead of the Prayers at Morning or Evening Prayer, the Collect of the Day, the Lord’s Prayer and the Grace are added here. ¶ Other Prayers A Prayer before Bible Reading Praying for children is one of the most powerful things you can do as a parent, carer or compassionate Christian.
