About this deal

I have enjoyed most of this author’s previous work, but this one was a BIG miss for me! If I wasn’t buddy reading it with DeAnn, it would have been a DNF!

Behind Closed Doors — B.A. Paris

This debut is guaranteed to haunt you... Warning: brace yourself.” — Bustle (10 New Thrillers to Read This Summer) and as much as i hate to use this review space to rant about something only tangentially related to the book, these things matter to me. plus, this is one of those books where i can already hear the shrieking of the people about how all of the spoilers in the world are being spoiled by me so it's probably best for me to do this instead. Behind Closed Doors is a chilling and atmospheric psychological thriller. I have read a few books recently about marriages that are not all they same and when this theme is done well (as this book does) it's absolutely breathtaking and scary. Disturbed is what you will feel with much of this book, don't be surprised if your mouth pops open (watch out for fruit flies at that point). My initial reaction during the beginning of this book was, "What The Hell Is Going On." I knew it wasn't good and I had an idea but ideas are never totally what your thinking. Overall: I found pacing fast and the twists smart enough to read this book in one sitting! Amelia’s naiveness and wrong decisions can be justified by her young age and having nobody to depend on.

I've been dying to read this book every since I first saw the blurb about it. I knew it wasn't going to be pretty and I have an un-holy attraction to books about psychos.

Gaslighting". Flip the switch. Move over Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman. This one is lit up and burning bright. So far so good, but for me it didn’t go much further. It wasn’t long before light was thrown on the real goings on behind closed doors. It didn't feel as though any real surprises were uncovered; it was pretty much what anyone would have expected from the introduction provided. And now maybe all that was left was to see how it was all to be resolved – except I’m less than half way through! In addition, I think Grace is a wimp and I’m struggling to find much sympathy for her. Behind Closed Doors (2017 film), a documentary shown at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival

Need Help?

I finished Behind Closed Doors about half an hour ago, and my heart still feels like it’s racing, probably not helped by me forgetting to breathe throughout the majority of the book. I found myself wishing I could read faster, just so I had a chance to catch my breath. Make sure you read this with a glass of wine or a box of chocolates, as they may save your life by distracting you from the story long enough to remind you oxygen is an essential part of survival. Behind Closed Doors" was a thrilling read with many twists and turns that left me reeling. A thoroughly engrossing novel that I won't soon forget. Thank you to Macmillan Audio, St. Martin’s Press, and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own. I received a copy of Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris from NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, and to B.A. Paris for the opportunity. Loved the first half of the book! But the ending just came apart at the seams. Endless explanation as to why and how the kidnapping happened. To the point I just wanted to scream “enough already”! Just too much!

Amelie begins the novel as a naïve young woman, just looking for a way to escape her life, and when the oppourtunity presents itself, she can’t be blamed for jumping at the chance. Even when it appears too good to be true. Ned is quite obviously a despicable creature, right from the start, but it isn’t until the story begins to unfold that we see his true devious nature. Behind Closed Doors, a series of live music performances recorded for the Dutch multimedia platform 3voor12 Loved, loved and loved Behind Closed Doors and am intrigued to read more from B.A. Paris. This book gains a 5 star rating for me. Go on, give it a whirl, peek behind the door and see what REALLY goes on. I double dare you.

What to Read Next

This sort of felt like an early 90s-Lifetime movie. Now, let me be clear, I love a good Lifetime movie now and again. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Lifetime movies. Please don't come at me. In the end, this story didn't work for me. The plot holes were hard to overlook, too much explaining was going on and the boring characters made me feel like the prisoner. This is not an upsetting brutal man in the full sense of the word as in beatings, so don't be mislead that this may turn your stomach, because it won't. If you thrive on books that leave you feeling trapped, isolated and with no one to turn to, then this is definitely the book for you. There isn't much mystery to speak of in this domestic thriller; its focus lies heavily on the struggle of our heroine and her desperate measures of combat.

Book Review: Behind Closed Doors by B. A. Paris - The Bookish Elf Book Review: Behind Closed Doors by B. A. Paris - The Bookish Elf

To make things worse, there is a stark absence of descriptive imagery, the characterisation is gossamer-thin and I've seen more twists on a runway.Amelie is kidnapped with her husband and kept a prisoner in a dark room with no idea why or who is behind it. The short chapters and alternating timeline kept the pace of this novel clipping along and the narrator of the audiobook was great. I also liked the spunk and bravery displayed by Amelie as the story progressed.
