I loved the characters and again, we have an unsung hero marching through a tumultuous time - the Elizabethan era.

Alfonso Willard - Bella's son by Barney Willard, eventually taken to England and becoming Mayor of Kingsbridge. In an age of relentless bigotry, each of them tried to persuade people of rival religions to live in peace. The novel is a long one, as the characters, events and the inter-relationship between the two are involved and intriguing. For Follett fans, the influence of his recently completed Century series is blunt in this narrative and plot development.Ned decides to work for Princess Elizabeth and when she ascends the throne, Ned takes on the role as her protector and does so as a kind of agent tracking down plots, assassins, and those who wish Elizabeth harm and death. With Elizabeth clinging precariously to her throne and her principles, protected by a small, dedicated group of resourceful spies and courageous secret agents, it becomes clear that the real enemies – then as now – are not the rival religions. From Spain to Europe, Scotland to England, and even parts of Africa and the Caribbean, this book tracks the various changing of the guard under Henry VIII's daughters, Mary and Elizabeth, as well as other claimants to the throne, Mary of Scots and James I. He’s done his homework on what actually happened in the Spanish Armada, but with a seaman like Ned’s brother Barney telling the story there’s no excuse to dumb it down. The author does a thorough job of setting his story, with some fictional characters and other historical persons, in an authentic plot derived from historical sources. A huge cast of characters, no character list provided, took quite a while to remember who was who, this is a very lengthy tome. I think I know why, and I'll get to that in a second, but I'd first like to say that this isn't a bad book.

There are too many characters that remain at the end of the book precisely at the point where they were when it began. Follett is again forced to use scores of characters to flesh out the story, some pulled from the history books and others completely of his own imagination. The fictional characters (I would have loved more depth for each one) are skilfully presented and perfectly inserted within the historical characters. I dare say it’s possible to learn the history from this book, always a scary thing to think about when discussing a novel.

Over a turbulent half-century, the love between Ned and Margery seems doomed, as extremism sparks violence from Edinburgh to Geneva. Erasmus, Calvin, and of course Martin Luther play a substantial role although they don’t actually appear. The breadth and density of this book is impressive and it focuses primarily on the person of Ned Willard - his background, personal development, family history and links with historical events. One of the most popular authors in the world, his many books including the Kingsbridge series and the Century trilogy - a body of work which together chronicles over a thousand years of history - and his latest novel Never - which envisages how World War III could happen - have sold more than 188 million copies. of our deliveries are made by Royal Mail as we think they give the best service and cover all areas of the UK.At first Margery protests, but eventually decides the match is God’s will, and agrees to marry Bart. The characters, both fictional and real, are fascinating, and the Tudor period setting holds its own special allure.

A Column of Fire, is a historical novel about spies and secret agents in the sixteenth century, the time of Queen Elizabeth I. He sailed upstream from Combe Harbour in the cabin of a slow barge loaded with cloth from Antwerp and wine from Bordeaux. Barred from watching films and television by his parents, he developed an early interest in reading thanks to a local library.Although I still need to finish the Century Trilogy, I’m anxiously waiting for his next book, “Never”, a mystery thriller and historical fiction, being released next month. Follett is a British author of bestselling spy thrillers and historical novels, including the Kingsbridge series and such works as Edge of Eternity and A Dangerous Fortune. He hopes Elizabeth, a Protestant, will prove a more tolerant ruler over both her Catholic and Protestant subjects. They will have their way no matter how many lives are lost not caring about the cost and toll their intolerance will bring upon the people.
